Hats and caps are an important headgear accessory that guard us against dust and harmful UV rays. While we can wear sunscreen on our skin for protection, it cannot be applied to the hair. Hence, covering them with a suitable accessory is the best choice.

From a business point of view, hats are the best medium to advertise your brand. It is a great idea for a business owner. Saying it to a digitizer is enough to make him lose his cool because hat digitizing is an arduous task. If it is not your first time getting a hat digitized, you will agree most digitizers refuse to do it. It is not because they are too busy to work on your order, most of them are not skilled enough. Hat Digitizing Is Tough but Not Impossible

Digitizing for caps and hats is very hard but there are ways to handle the challenges. It is only a matter of understanding the situation and make appropriate decisions while applying the settings. Here we will discuss the commonly faced issues by digitizers and embroiderers while handling hats and caps.

Bucket Hats

The bucket hat is made from a sturdy cotton fabric such as denim or canvas. It has a wide but sloping downward brim. Due to the thick material, one feels hot wearing it thus manufacturers put eyelets on the crown for ventilation. Widely popular as fisherman’s hat, it became a fashion accessory when designers used it on the catwalk in 1960s.

Bucket hats are usually a composition of six different pieces. In most cases, it is only possible to use designs and fonts vertically. Hats with shorter circumference are even more challenging because of even less working space. Most hats have a fabric around the hem which means the available space has squeezed even more. To add insult to injury, many bucket hats have air holes and snaps to their sides for ventilation. It makes matters even worse for a digitizer.

Besides digitizing, bucket hats prove equally challenging under the needle as well. The hat’s brim often gets caught in the machine’s arm. When that happens, it gets oily and stained causing a distress on the production floor. The embroiderer has to stop the process and get the hat cleaned. Machines are thoroughly oiled to reduce friction as the parts move at lightning speed. If cleaning is delayed until the embroidery is completed, the stain marks often become permanent.

Solution

Many bucket hat shapes will cause the problems mentioned above and unfortunately there is no escaping it. There are no practical solutions other than to ensure the machines are cleaned well after oiling them. Certainly, it is an onerous job, but to avoid staining, better be careful first than regret it later. Light colored fabrics are the worst because sometimes stain marks cannot be removed.

Visor Caps

The main function of a visor cap is to provide shade to the eyes. It does not provide protection to the hair because there is no upper layer. It is more like a headband with a shade attached to it. Visors are more used in sports than fashion and tennis players use it the most.

The problem

Compared to bucket hats, the problem intensifies with visor caps. Workable space shrinks further and hat digitizing gets even more challenging. A horizontal design is best suited rather than vertical. Customers with tall business logos are asked to provide vertical alternates. In most cases it is not possible and the logo has to be shrunk a very small size.

Similarly, embroiderers have to be very cautious as there is no backside to be embroidered.

Solution

Owing to the shape there is not much anyone can do. To handle the available space the digitizer first has to plan outside the software. Taking notes of the dimensions, he then needs to plan the settings that can work with the design. The front center is the only ideal location to place the logo.

Snapback Cap Hat Digitizing

Better known as a baseball cap, has a much better space to hold the logo. It is ideal to use for advertisement. Company logo, music artist logo, team logo and even youtubers’ channel name can be placed on the front.

Problem

Snapbacks are easy to deal with during digitizing. The only problem that occurs is during the embroidery process. Snapback bills are large and stiff and that can be a hurdle.

Solution

The digitizer will carefully digitize the logo. The embroiderer must instruct his staff to keep the trimmers straight. But it is necessary for his staff to keep a watchful eye throughout the stitching process.

Toques Hat Digitizing

A toque is a wool knit cap and is popularly known as a beanie. It is a head hugging hat and is made of panels sewn together.

Problem

A beanie does not have problems like the other above-mentioned hats. There is ample space for the logo and even a tall one can be easily adjusted. But since the front and back have no distinction, the embroiderer has to be extra careful working with multicolored beanies.

Solution

During embroidery, make sure to use an underlay because the material is stretchy. To manage the push and pull compensation, using an extra layer will provide stability. During embroidery digitizing, the use of fill stitch can also provide relief and keep the design afloat.
